  • Misuse of a source includes: Taking material out of context and misrepresenting the viewpoint of the author. Using material without giving credit to a source.
  • Keep a research log: Search terms you used, noting which ones were good and which were less productive. Ideas and questions that occur to you while browsing and reading. Notes about catalogs and idexes you searched on any particular day. Complete bibliographical information about each source you plan to use and notes about what the source contains and how you might use it. Personal responses to sources you read and notes about how different sources compare or contrast on the same topic or issue.
  • Make and store complete copies of sources that you may use when finding sources.
  • Monographs are sustained arguments on a single topic.
  • Anthologies are collections of essays and articles usually by many different writers, selected by an editor, who writes an introductory essay.
  • Reference books are good for gathering background information and specific facts on your topic.
  • Articles in scholarly journals are usually published by university presses and aimed at readers in a particular scholarly discipline.
  • Articles in magazines print, online, and the born digital e zines are good sources for short papers.
  • Newspapers are ideal sources for arguments and information on current as well as historical issues.
